Washington D.C. – The following is a statement of Just Label It’s Chairman, Gary Hirshberg on the Vermont State Congress passing the first GE labeling law that doesn’t contain a “trigger clause”:
“With both the Vermont Senate and House passing H. 112 to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods and ingredients, we have reached an historic moment in the battle toward national GE labeling. The bill is now headed to Governor Peter Shumlin’s desk and once signed it will be the first state labeling law to pass with ‘no strings attached.’
This is a huge victory for consumers across the country especially as we are facing the Deny Consumers the Right to Know (DARK) Act in congress which would prohibit mandatory labeling and pre-empt state efforts to label GE foods. Vermont’s law will establish a precedent that other states are sure to follow.”
