Corn Hardwired for Chemicals: A Video Asks “Could You Taste the Difference”?

Remember the Pepsi Challenge?  That taste test when we were kids and challenged to see if we could taste the difference?  It’s been a marketing promotion for the soda company since 1975.

Today, it’s been reinvented…for corn.  A group took to the streets with the Monsanto Challenge.  You may not have heard of Monsanto.  It’s not a household name like Coke and Pepsi, but it should be.  The company actually has more products and ingredients in your pantry and kitchen than just about any other food company.

They are famous for a lot of things, most notably, the weedkiller RoundUp that we are told not to keep under our kitchen sinks in order to keep out of the reaches of our kids.  It has been a wildly popular product for the chemical company.  So much so, that using that revenue-yielding product, they redesigned our food crops so that they could spray and sell more of it.  This change took place in the mid 1990s, and today, our corn, canola and soy have been engineered to withstand increasing doses of it.

Pesticide use is skyrocketing across the Midwestern U.S. corn belt, as the chemical companies like Syngenta and AMVAC Chemical watch their pesticide sales spike 50 to 100 percent over the past two years, according to reports this summer.

If you didn’t know, you’re not alone. No announcements were made in grocery stores, no labels, no heads up.

But since it’s a new technology (it wasn’t like this when we were kids), a group decided to take to the streets to see if people could taste the difference.  The video below is pretty fascinating, entertaining and begs the question: Would you be able to tell if you corn had been hardwired and treated with chemicals? It’s a fair question, and the reason that this corn is labeled in over 60 countries around the world.  It isn’t labeled here, not in the supermarkets, not in the mega stores, not in the kids’ food aisle.

Take a look.
